Curious About Cupping??

Cupping is an Ancient Chinese tradition dating back thousands of years.  The cups are applied to your body during your massage and while they are on, the suction lifts and separates the connective tissue and pulls the fascia apart creating a reverse pressure.  

While the cups are on, blood rushes to the surface leaving behind the tell tale red circle marks that made cupping a public fascination when seen on the back of Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps during the 2012 Olympics.  

It's important to understand the red marks left behind are not bruises and they rarely hurt.  Bruises are caused by impact trauma that breaks capillaries in the injured area.  With cupping there is no impact or compression involved.  In fact, cupping does the opposite.  

The marks last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.  The darker the mark, the more stagnant fluids (toxins, blood and lymph) were dredged up during treatment.  The more often you having cupping done, the lighter the marks will be.  

Cupping Aftercare

  • Hydrate, hydrate and then hydrate some more!  Water is always important after a massage and even more so with cupping because it moves more blood and lymph around than a traditional massage
  • Don't take a shower immediately after a cupping session
  • Avoid alcohol - or anything else known to dehydrate the body
  • You may feel fatigued or experience flu-like symptoms the next few days.  This is your body processing and expelling toxins and it's totally normal.
